Ladies' Early 1860's Day Dress Pattern

View A is a copy of an extant period dress in the author's collection. Views B and C are copies of extant sleeves. Finished Length of Skirt is 42" in front and 45" in back.

All Views have a two dart front bodice and a classic curved V, tucked back. The darts are boned. The front of the skirt is directionally knife pleated, the sides are box pleated and the back is cartridge pleated (gauged). The bodice, sleeves, and skirt are flat lined with polished cotton. The skirt has a pocket and is stitched to the bodice. The bodice has piping at the neck, armscyes and waist. View A has coat sleeves, View B has pagoda sleeves, and View C has pleated pagoda sleeves. Included are a 1 1/2 inch collar and plain undersleeves.
Dress Fabric:

Silk - Taffeta, Loom-Figured, Moiré, Satin, Iridescent, Faille. Drapey or Slubby silk not recommended.
Wool - Challis, Cheviot, Herringbone, Gabardine, Worsteds, Serge, Broadcloth, Twill, Flannel or Novelty Weaves.
Lining:

Polished Cotton, Sateen or Plain Cotton.
Collar and Undersleeves:

White Cotton Broadcloth, Cambric, Batiste, Lawn, Nainsook, Organdy.
Notions:

Four 5" long, 1/4" wide bones, 10 5/8" buttons or 12 3/8" buttons and/or 14 medium size hooks and eyes. Fine gauge cotton cooking or knitting twine. Poly or cotton stuffing.

TV422 - 1881 Dinner Bodice. Multisized 30-50" bust. This style is particularly suited to 1878 - 1882, and is perfect for dinner and evening events. The neckline is high at the neck in back and cut in a low diamond in front. A small half collar is optional. The bodice is cuirass length in front and has a longer square "tail" in back. The fitted sleeve is in 2 pieces, and can be made either full- or ¾-length. The bodice is drafted based on a tailoring method actually used in the 1870's. Each size is hand drawn, not scaled, with all of the bodice seams true to the era. This bodice is designed to fit snugly over a corset, without a bustle. Sizing and Yardage Information: 45" wide fabric All Sizes Fabric 2 ¾ yards Lining 2 ¾ yards Interlining 1 ¾ yards Yardages given are with nap. TV456 - 1856 Gathered Dress. Multisized 30-50" Bust. This pattern is for an 1856 dress, designed from fashion plates and original garments of the pre-civil war era. This style is suitable for the years 1855-1862, and fits over TV141 round hoop. It has a gathered Fan Front bodice, with a fitted lining and a gathered back. The deep V neckline can be filled in with a chimisette, or left open for a dinner dress. The full gathered sleeve has a fitted upper section and dropped shoulder line. The bodice reaches to the waist at the back and sides, with a shallow point in front. The bodice can also be made plain, if desired. A full skirt is attached to the bodice, or can be sewn to a separate waistband. The closure is in the center front, with hooks and eyes. Each size is hand drawn, not scaled, with all of the bodice seams true to the era. This bodice is designed to fit snugly over a corset. Sizing and Yardage Information: Multisized 30-50" Bust Fabric: 7 ½ yards. Light weight fabrics, cotton, linen, silk, etc. Lining: 1 ½ yards. Use a medium weight, firmly woven fabric like light twill or heavy broadcloth. Yardages given are with nap and are approximate only. Pattern matching may require more fabric. For Interlining, use a heavy woven fabric like twill or denim. Notions: Seven - ¼" Bones; hooks and bars for closure, 3 - 5 yards cording for piping. Western, SASS Living History.
